Artist Statement

Growing up, photography has always interested me. When I was about five years old, I picked up my grandmother’s polaroid camera and began snapping pictures. After some time, she would let me use the disposable cameras she had as well. Ever since then, I have never stopped taking pictures. Photography is the one thing in my life that I have never given up on. Once I had gotten into high school, I began taking black and white film photography classes and fell completely in love with the darkroom. I gradually then moved into a studio photography class where I learned how to use artificial lighting. I have always kept film photography close to my heart, and always will. Nowadays, I shoot mainly digital, but I still continue to shoot film on the side for my own personal benefit. My series of photographs I have been working on for a number of years has been a concentration in urban exploration. I find beauty in the decay of buildings and how nature overtakes them. This will always be my favorite subject to shoot, but recently I have been trying to use the human form rather than just buildings. In my most recent series, I have been using projectors to project landscapes and images of nature across the human body. The way the image bends and forms with the movement or curves of the shape of a human being catches my eye. I find it fascinating that I can use my own images, but still continue on a new series with them in a completely different way. I plan to continue this series over a long period of time to see how I can progress as photographer and see how much more interesting I can make these photographs become.
